C O M M U N I T Y C O N N E C T I O N S Libraries are known for connecting people with each other, with knowledge, and with the world around them. The Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest takes that connection a step further, intricately connecting the building itself with its physical surroundings as well as to the greater community. For instance, when it opened in 2010, it was the first LEED-certified (Leader- ship in Energy and Environmental Design) library in the state, and a number of green design components connect it to the land around it. More than 80 percent of the trees harvested from the land during construction were reincorporated into the library, taking shape as pine ceilings; a poplar entry hall; and oak service desks and doors. Other components such as a rooftop garden and parking lot drains for water collection allow the library to continue functioning off its natural environment. Also the library's outdoor spaces are designed to build connections between it and its constituents. Sitting at the trailhead of Boulder Canyon Loop, the library is connected to Vestavia Hills Elementary Central via a scenic trail almost one mile long. As a vibrant, indispensable resource that enriches the lives of people in all seasons of life, the library offers more than 630 programs each year and hosts almost 500,000 visitors each year.
