V Candidates for Business of the Year are nominated by the Chamber's Business Development Committee, and the Board of Directors selects the winners. Selection is based on the organization's relationship with the community, customers, and employees, as well as Chamber and civic involvement. F A N C Y G O O D S V A R I E T Y An old-fashioned variety store specializing in gifts and toys, Fancy Goods opened its doors in February 2012. The store is known for its inventory of more than 300 different classic toys made by Melissa & Doug, and an annual month-long sale on the entire line, says Owner Leslie Self. In addition to toys, Fancy Goods always has a selection of unique gifts. For instance, the shop offers merchandise created by several local artists, as well as handmade, fair-trade merchandise made by overseas artisans. Recently, Fancy Goods added to its inventory Earth Creations clothing, which is owned by a Vestavia Hills couple and manufactured in their factory in Moulton, Ala. And the shop proudly offers several "Made In The USA" lines, such as Duke Cannon Soap (field tested on active duty military), Solmate Socks, Curly Girl greeting cards, Jack & Rocky Ridge Area Reaps V e s tav i a H i l l s i s b r i m m i n g w i t h v i b r a n t, s u c c e s s f u l bu s i n e s s e s t h at a r e i n vo lv e d w i t h t h e lo c a l c o m m u n i t y. But each year, the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce recognizes two—one retail, one service—that stand out above the rest with its Business of the Year awards. This year, both recipients hail from the Rocky Ridge area: Fancy Goods Variety on Rocky Ridge Road and Southmont Development/ Morgan Properties, located on Morgan Drive.
