In addition to special events like the Health and Wellness Fair, the Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of classes and activities in the Civic Center. They include Jazzercise, Chinese language courses, Chinese dance class, Young Rembrandts, Hindi class, Senior Bridge Club, English as a second language class, tumbling class, art classes and ballet. Director Jason Burnett says he and his staff are always open to ideas for new classes, and anyone who wants to start a new In Cahaba Heights, the department operates the New Merkle House, which provides many opportunities for Vestavia Hills seniors. "We eat, play games, socialize, and just have a pleasant time at the New Merkle House," Burnett says. For sports enthusiasts, Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation offers a wide variety of athletic leagues for both children and adults. Hundreds of local residents participate in city soccer, baseball, softball, football and lacrosse, all played on the city's top-notch athletic fields. During the summer months, Vestavia Hills has an active swim season. The Parks and Recreation Department offers swim badges and swim lessons at the Wald Park Pool. The pool is also available for rental for private events. In addition to pool rentals, the parks department offers several other spaces for rent, including the Wald Park outdoor pavilion, the Civic Center's Dogwood Room, Vestavian Room, and the Lodge.
