In Vestavia Hills, when residents are no longer able to drive themselves, they don't have to stop going places. For almost 30 years, the city's senior transportation program has provided $1 rides for seniors to run errands or get to medical appointments. The city provides and maintains two vehicles for the program, which offers rides four days per week. Two days are designated for seniors to run errands within Vestavia Hills city limits, and two days are designated for medical appointments, which may be outside the city limits. Launched in 1985 by then-mayor Sara Wuska, the senior driving program has always been operated by volunteer drivers. Most of the program's approximately 20 drivers are active local seniors who may "get more satisfaction" from driving their peers than their appreciative passengers, Wuska says. For more information, contact the Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation a On the second Monday of every month, members of the Vestavia Hills Senior Association present a tasty home-cooked luncheon for local seniors. While many other senior gatherings offer educational sessions, "these luncheons are just for fun," says Ruby Denson, who heads up the events. "We want seniors to have at least one event a month where they can just come and sit back and enjoy themselves." To participate in the luncheons, seniors are asked to make a reservation by calling Denson at 205.822.8788. This summer, the Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with OLLI, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Alabama. Through this program, seniors from throughout the Vestavia Hills area can participate in top-notch courses held at the Vestavia Hills Library. For more information about these courses, please call the Parks and Recreation Department a Vestavia Hills Chapter website at OLLIVestavia.org.
