Yo u t h L e a d e r s h i p V e s t a v i a H i l l s . The mission of Youth Leadership Vestavia Hills is to train students to become leaders who have and show respect for all. This is incredibly important in respect to the epidemic of bullying, and sometimes suicide, in our schools today. This program was developed in 2005 from a Leadership Vestavia Hills project. Kelly Bottcher and Kym Prewitt breathed life into this program and are still actively involved today. It was years ahead of its time and later adopted into the Vestavia Hills High School curriculum. At this time this extraordinary program has touched the lives of over 1800 Vestavia Hills High School students. D r . C h a r l e s " S c o t t y " A . M c C a l l u m , J r . , D . M . D . , M . D . Mayor of Vestavia Hills 2000-2008, President of UAB 1987-1993. The only honoree to receive both the Distinguished Citizen and Lifetime Achievement Awards, McCallum is a nationally recognized oral and maxillofacial surgeon and his talents and contributions as President of UAB and two-term Mayor of Vestavia Hills have enhanced the lives of literally thousands of people. D a n a n d J a n e t S i m s . This couple established the Janie Sims Children's Foundation, in honor of their daughter, Janie, who died from leukemia in 2003. This non-profit foundation is committed to supporting and funding research toward a cure for pediatric cancer and provides aid, comfort, education and recreational experiences to children with cancer and their families. They also teamed up with Deidre Downs, Miss America 2005, to create and convince the Alabama Motor Vehicle Department to offer the "Curing Childhood Cancer" specialty automobile tags to raise money for childhood cancer research. M a y o r S a r a W u s k a . Mayor of Vestavia Hills from 1984-1988. Mayor Wuska was instrumental in forming the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce in 1981. She is the unofficial historian of Vestavia Hills and has taught the history of Vestavia Hills to Leadership Vestavia Hills members for many years. E l a i n e V a n C l e a v e . Elaine Van Cleave served as district organizer for Bread for the World, an organization dedicated to ending world hunger. On behalf of this organization she lobbies for hunger legislation in Washington, DC and was honored as one of 30 "hunger heroes" when the organization celebrated its thirtieth anniversary. A . G e r o w H o d g e s . A 1942 graduate of Howard College (later Samford University), and a member of the Bulldogs football team, Gerow Hodges suffered a shoulder injury from his football career, which left him unable to serve in the military. Instead, he volunteered with the Red Cross, serving alongside the 94th Infantry in Western Europe. He negotiated for the release of 149 Allied prisoners in German camps in Brittany in 1944 and was twice awarded the Bronze Star, the highest military decoration available to a civilian. For almost 40 years he served as a Trustee of Samford University and in 2002 the chapel at Samford University was named in his honor. C o a c h S a m m y D u n n . Coach Sammy Dunn is remem- bered as one of the most successful coaches in the history of Alabama high school baseball. Coach Dunn's Vestavia baseball teams won nine state titles from 1991-2000, including seven straight from 1994-2000. In 1998, his team won the National Championship and Coach Dunn was named National Coach of the Year. He was again named National Coach of the Year in 1999. Coach Dunn's 27-year record at Vestavia w C o a c h B u d d y A n d e r s o n . Coach Buddy Anderson is known throughout Alabama as the state's winningest active high-school head coach. When he was honored in 2012, his record was very close to holding the record for the most all-time wins. At that time his record was 287-119. At this time, Coach Anderson's record is 308-125, only 2 games away from most all-time wins in Alabama. He is the winningest high school football coach at one school in the state of all time. Those who play for him know first-hand they are being taught life lessons aimed at making them winners in life. M a y o r C . P a t R e y n o l d s . Mayor C. Pat Reynolds was honored posthumously with a Special Recognition Award in 2007. He was a three- term mayor and served from 1988-2000. Mayor Reynolds played an integral role in starting the Chamber of Commerce and the annual tradition of "I Love America" Day. Our annual Citizen of the Year celebration was his idea. During his tenure, the city annexed more than 3,000 acres of residential and commercial property now known as Liberty Park. His diligence in providing for the quality of life of our citizens twice earned the city recognition in a national survey as one of the 50 best places to live and raise a family in America. 26 v e s tav i a h i l l s l i v i n g 2 0 1 4
