"We have the perfect location for patrons to check out a good book and hammock, and enjoy a peaceful afternoon in the forest," says Holly Turner, communications specialist at the library. 2 . Wa l k i n g S t i c k s . In a city full of trails, it's only fitting that the library offers walking sticks. Check one out and use it on your next hike through some of the city's beautiful trails. 3 . R o k u S t i c k s : There's no need to buy a smart TV to stream the movies you want to see. Just visit the library and check out a Roku stick that is preloaded with drama, comedy, horror, science fiction, or action movies. 4 . H o t S p o t s . Heading out on vacation and need WiFi in the car? At the library, Vestavia Hills residents can check out wireless hotspots for one week. 5 . H o m e w o r k H e l p. Homework Alabama offers free online tutoring for mainstream subjects from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Online tutors are also available to provide job search assistance. Twice each year, the Teen Department offers a free ACT Workshop, where students learn tips and study resources to help them improve their ACT scores. In addition to prep books in the library's collection, there's also a Playaway Launchpad, a preloaded tablet with apps that cover ACT math, science and practice tests. 7 . Fr e e C o m p u t e r C l a s s e s . The library's Technology Department offers a range of diverse classes at no charge, including classes on Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Apple Mobile Devices with Tech Ease, 3D Printing and vinyl cutting. 8 . L a n g u a g e Le s s o n s . Through Mango Languages, library patrons can take language lessons online at the library. 9 . Pa s s p o r t s . Preparing for international travel? No problem. With the Libby app, library patrons can download thousands of ebooks and audiobooks for all ages. And with Hoopla, the library offers a huge selection of movies, TV shows, music and audiobooks. For access, visit 1 1 . I n t e r - L i b ra r y Lo a n . The Library in the Forest is part of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative (JCLC). The JCLC was established 40 years ago so patrons can enjoy a "One County, One Library Card" system. As one of 40 locations throughout Jefferson County, patrons have easy access to 2 million titles. 1 2 . Fu t u r e M a k e r s p a c e . The former café area at the front of the library will soon be transformed into a dedicated space for the library's Makerspace. In the new multi-function area, patrons will be able to use the library's Makerspace equipment, including 3D printers, vinyl cutting machines and computers. With $40,000 in seed money from the Friends of the Vestavia Hills Library, the Library Foundation is working to raise an additional $100,000 to fund construction of the Makerspace, as well as provide additional equipment, furniture and supplies.
