S Greg Canfield During Canfield's tenure, the Vestavia Hills City Council undertook the city's first comprehensive plan for land use and economic development. "That experience gave me the opportunity to learn about the importance of economic development and land use, which helped prepare me for this role," he says. "I was involved in due diligence, planning, organizing and gaining a better understanding of the business community in Vestavia Hills." Over the past seven years, Canfield has leveraged that experience to benefit the people and businesses of the entire state of Alabama. "What I learned as president of the Vestavia Hills City Council was that all politics are local, and all economic development tends to begin locally too," he says. F O S T E R I N G G R O W T H During his time in the Department of Commerce, Canfield has helped recruit major manufacturing projects to the state, including the $1.6 billion Mazda-Toyota partnership in Huntsville, Google data center in Jackson County, Airbus in Mobile, Polaris in Huntsville, Autocar in Birmingham, Blue Origin in Huntsville and Kimber in Troy.
