business owners were thrilled to host more than 600 shoppers on that day. In addition to larger crowds in the stores on that day, the event drove increased profits: Participating merchants saw an average sales increase of 8 percent for the month of November, and the trend continued into December. "Events like Deck the Heights are a win for the community, a win for the city and a win for the businesses," McRee says. "Increased sales means increased sales tax revenue and the higher our revenue, the more services Vestavia Hills can provide to the residents— more sidewalks, improved roads, more money for our schools and more money for our parks." Service businesses in the Cahaba Heights area served as Trolley Sponsors and the Vestavia Hills Belles volunteered as tour guides, rounding out the event as a true community gathering.
