The foundation is committed to community policing and facilitates sponsorship opportunities of community events by soliciting public-private partnerships on behalf of the police department, Ammons says. For example, the Foundation served as the department's community partner in sponsoring the inaugural session of VHPD's Youth Leader- ship Challenge, a weeklong challenge for 20 local teens. The Foundation also coordinated Vestavia Hills' annual Commu- nity Night Out, which exceeded all expectations, drawing in an estimated 2,500 people. 3 . E D U C A T I O N A N D D E V E L O P M E N T . The Foundation is also prepared to assist VHPD and its officers with professional development and technology. "Frequently, unique training opportunities and new technology present themselves and will exceed, or fall outside of the framework of, the police department's fiscal year budget," Ammons says. "The foundation allocates a certain percentage of our general fund to address these unique opportunities and requests." All training and development requests come directly from the Chief of Police or his designee, and must be approved by the Foundation board. Eventually, the Foundation has a goal to place a monument on the front lawn of the Police Department, honoring all police officers that have given their lives in the line of duty and for those that currently serve. "Essentially, we want the monument and the Foundation to serve as a constant reminder that their community supports them, to say, 'We've got your back,'" Ammons says.
