I It's impossible to build a strong community when residents don't feel safe and secure. The Vestavia Hills Police Department (VHPD) has always provided reliable protection for local residents and property, crime prevention and law enforcement. In appreciation for the department's work to preserve the city's high quality of life, a group of community volunteers founded the Vestavia Hills Police Foundation in January 2017. Support Police with New Foundation 1 . B E N E V O L E N C E . "Over the years, when there was a tragic event in the life of an officer or one of their family members, the police department would pass the hat amongst themselves to support that officer," Ammons says. "In the foundation's short existence, we have supported a number of officers in their time of bereavement in the form of flowers or, in the case of significant or terminal illness, financial support." By providing for such needs, the Foundation frees officers from the financial burden and shows them that the commu- nity they serve cares about their needs. For instance, when tragedy struck the police department in November 2017 with the unfortunate loss of Officer Robert Hancock, the Foundation provided support both to the department and to the Hancock family. 2 0 1 8 v e s tav i a h i l l s l i v i n g 49
