in the community that they love." In an effort to be even more intentional in ministering to the city, the church launched two major ministry initiatives in 2016: Community Engagement and Community Life. Community Engagement is focused on serving the local community, such as adopting East and West elementary schools and serving First Responders through Cop Stops, sponsoring training, commissioning chaplains and sending notes of encouragement. Community Life provides a safe place for people in the community to come and enjoy recreation with programs like "After the Bell" and "Kids Kamp," which serve hundreds of local families. "Not a day goes by without people from the community coming by to play pickup basketball, a few games of racquetball, or kick a soccer ball around on our rec field," Browning says. "These facilities and programs are not meant for church members; they are meant for anyone who calls the community around our church home." Shades Mountain's motto is "Live Sent," Browning says. "For us, it's really not about how many people we can gather together on a Sunday morning or how many ministries we can build for ourselves. It's about sending people out to have a positive influence in the world. We have experienced the transforming power of Jesus Christ in our lives. We believe that God has called us to live for more than ourselves. So, we take serious the calling to get outside the walls of the church and meet the needs of this community in tangible ways." 2 0 1 8 v e s tav i a h i l l s l i v i n g 43
