A R T S The seniors aren't always just sitting still while at New Merkel. They also enjoy using their hands and talents to create new things together. Each month, Tina Chaffin, a local artist, comes in and teaches art projects to the group. An upcoming project will involve learning to make lap blankets, which will be given to Affinity Hospice for their patients. Chaffin will also donate note cards featuring her original paintings, so that participating seniors can use them to write notes to be given with the blankets. "Affinity Hospice does so much for our senior programs, we want to give back by helping others," Perry says. S E R V I C E The hospice project isn't the only opportunity for seniors to give back. "We regularly take care of those in need through community outreach," Perry says. "Our seniors make crafts, cookies, and cards for our homebound seniors, and we send them with their Meals on Wheels, which are prepared and sent out from the center." Last year, for instance, New Merkel seniors presented the local fire department with more than 100 stuffed animals for first responders to share with children in need during emergencies, Perry says. F U N One of the most important goals of the center is to simply provide enjoyment for seniors to enrich their lives and build relationships. And that comes in various forms, always packed with fun. "Every week, we enjoy music, exercise, tai chi, bingo and daily games, as well as occasional field trips," Perry says. "We go to the symphony several times a year. We dance a little and sing along with a musician that plays the piano every Friday." The center also hosts monthly celebrations for holidays such as Veterans Day, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Indepen- dence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. "We are like one big happy family and we have a great time," Perry says. All seniors are invited to come and join the group for lunch, games, art, gardening and fun at the New Merkel Senior Center, located at 4405 Dolly Ridge Road.
