N N Seniors Stay Social at New Merkel "We are an active senior center and proud to be part of the Vestavia Hills community," says Melanie Perry, director of the New Merkel Senior Center. Participants at the center have opportunities to interact with each other and the community numerous times every week, and the wide variety of offerings ensures that there's something to interest everyone. F O O D Every weekday, the New Merkel Senior Center serves lunch to local seniors. Many of the dishes prepared there contain fresh vegetables and herbs from the center's community garden. "The city's public services department worked to build raised beds for our garden, and we are grateful to them for making this happen," Perry says. "Each April, we celebrate Earth Day with a garden party, and our seniors plant vegetables and herbs in our two raised beds. Then we enjoy fresh vegetables all summer long, and the seniors take some home with them to enjoy as well. We also plant a fall garden to keep enjoying fresh foods throughout most of the year." L E A R N I N G Research shows that continual learning, at any age, contributes to a healthy mind—and at New Merkel Center, seniors learn together as well as eat together. Center staff works to provide interesting, informative speakers that can "empower and educate our seniors," Perry says. Recent presentations have been provided by local
