I Lifelong Learner: Vestavia Hills Resident Earns Diploma at 85 I n 1 9 4 8 , L o t t i e J ac k s e n ro l l e d i n H o wa r d C o l l e g e , t h e p r e d e c e s s o r o f B i r m i n g h a m ' s S a m f o r d U n i v e r s i t y. After completing three and a half years of study, she married her sweetheart, William Russell Jacks, intending to finish her degree later. However, children came soon after her marriage, and Jacks, busy raising a family of four, simply never went back to school. At least, not until almost seven decades had passed. In June 2015, she enrolled in college for the second time, and in May 2016, at the age of 85, the energetic, determined Jacks graduated from Samford with a bachelor's degree in biology. T H E L O N G R O A D B A C K Although she was preoccupied with her family for many years, Jacks always wanted to finish her college degree. "I used to dream about it at night," she says. While she had opportunities to return to school, Jacks says the time was never right. She worked as a medical technician for 35 years, and her first boss offered to pay for the completion of Jacks' degree. "But I just didn't want to leave my children," she says.
