Those teams include five all-boys teams and one all-girls team. While Pizitz students are in seventh and eighth grades, all six teams competed only against high school teams during the past school year, Moncrief says. And they were quite successful. Two of the boys teams have received an Excellence Award, and the girls team— which is the only all-girls middle school team in the state of Alabama—has received three excellence awards. The girls team went to the VEX World Robotics Championship and is ranked in the top 5 percent of the world. Along with their success at competing, participating students are also enhancing their education through robotics. "The Pizitz Robotics program encourages students to learn and apply their knowledge without limits, which enhances their opportunity for growth in all areas," Moncrief says. "The program offers hands-on activities to students who may feel socially awkward. It builds confidence, leadership skills, team building and good work ethics, which are all needed for employment."
