Students at East participate in a variety of activities each year to support STEM education, focused on science, math, engineering and technology. From grades kindergarten through third, students undergo architectural building challenges, LEGO robotics, dissecting owl pellets, planting gardens, and many more. Through these activities, "our students get a real taste of what it is like to be an engineer, or a farmer, or a scientist," Richardson says. "They are presented with and research background information, are given real problems to solve or questions to answer, and then they get to work. The students are learning and having a great time at the same time. I see more of these types of activities going on now than I can remember seeing before, and the kids are definitely benefiting." As a result of the increased focus on STEM activities, students are providing positive feedback and demonstrating advanced capabilities. "They are able to share with us many principles of engineering, are able to write code for simple robots, and they are able to plant and harvest vegetables from a garden," Richardson says.
